WHERE WE ARE

The archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe is located in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, one of the least known tropical marine provinces, with a relatively small number of studies on the marine and coastal biodiversity of São Tomé and Príncipe carried out in the Gulf of Guinea area. From the point of view of the country's marine ecology, there is still a lack of information on various taxonomic groups.

With the collaboration of fishing communities, government authorities, the private sector and civil society some priority areas were identified for conservation.

São Tomé e Príncipe

In 2012, Príncipe Island was designated by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.

The island has a high marine biodiversity, with coral reefs, rhodolith fields (locally known as glá-glá), important fish species (including endangered species such as sharks and rays), whales and dolphins, the largest colony of seabirds in the entire Gulf of Guinea (the Tinhosas) and several important feeding and breeding areas for the region's sea turtles.

Around 10,000 people live on the island of Príncipe, with agriculture, fishing and livestock farming as their main economic activities.
